Martin Speake and
Will Butterworth Duo
The first time Martin and Will met and played together was Ajani’s, a club in North London, run by the wonderful Patrick, that unfortunately doesn’t exist anymore. Years later they met by chance walking in Hilly Fields in Ladywell and arranged to meet up and play.
This gradually became regular and they would alternate playing a standard song and free improvisation. Discussing music and influences they found they had some mutual reference points including Keith Jarrett, Paul Bley, Charlie Parker, Paul Motian and others. This built up a repertoire of structured songs and also an approach to improvising where melody was paramount whether on a song or creating spontaneously from nothing. They then recorded the album Love and Freedom consisting of totally improvised pieces in a couple of hours and then on another occasion an album of standard songs yet to be released.
